About Us

Partners for Parrots is a small non-profit organization owned and operated by husband and wife Greg and Andrea Fahy.  We are focused on the continual improvement of parrot keeping, to improve the lives of the parrots in captivity, improving the parrot to human relationships, thus improving the chances of these birds keeping their good homes!

At Partners for Parrots we believe strongly in caregiver education.  We also believe strongly in species appropriate keeping - this means encouraging a life that is as close as possible to the natural life as we can achieve in captivity. Flighted, but trained for recall and other behaviors, paired with a same species, opposite gender mate, natural organic diet, not being housed in the average cage that prevents flight, plenty of environmental enrichment including plenty of daily foraging.  Many of our keeping methods have been influenced by a white paper on The German Minimum Requirements for the Keeping of Parrots. We also understand that parrots thrive on respectful relationships with their people, that they are not to be dominated but viewed as a loved equal.

It should be of interest to anyone visiting us that keeps birds or is interested in doing so to know a little about our interest in avian keeping!  We have been working with companion birds since 2002.  We began hand rearing parrots for companion pet purposes as well as to incorporate into breeding programs since 2003.  In 2006 we ceased breeding and hand raising parrots for numerous reasons.  Our adoption program is being closed this year, 2008.

When first introduced to parrot keeping, we were taught that the only good pet parrot was one that was hand raised, kept singly and in a cage.  We were also taught to "be in charge of your parrot"  Delving time, studies and first hand experience into parrot keeping we have since learned those things were all wrong!

Over the years our ideas have changed drastically.  At this point in time I feel that parrots should not be kept as pets and this puts me in a very delicate position.  I know that there are many parrots already in captivity and they deserve to live appropriate lives.  For this reason, we are offering the resources of this website that will be further developed over time.  We also offer an extremely valuable training book, The bird school. Clicker training for parrots and other birds. By: Ann Castro as well as a selection of toys by Novel Tweet toys and some gift items.  All of these items for sale raise money for this website, the forum and any associated projects in need of funding (rescued birds, veterinary birds, donations to sanctuaries, etc.)

We share our home currently with one pair of Aratinga conures.  This by no means indicates a lack of understanding and experience living with other species.  We were the home for macaws, African greys, parrotlets, lovebirds, cockatiels, grass parakeets, cockatiels, etc. for several years.  These birds have since joined new homes, mostly sanctuary environments where they can live out their days in large flighted aviaries in a flock of their own kind.

Since we are no longer running an adoption program, we will do our best to list sanctuaries and other organizations that are equipped and able to help you with your parrot needs.

We hope that you will join our forums and get to know us better and have access to valuable advice on parrot keeping, behavior issues and much more!
